This week in the world of vegetable gardening we learned about the three essential plant nutrients: environmental, macronutrients, and micronutrients. Environmental nutrients make up 95% of the nutrients in the soil and consist of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Macronutrients are the second most prevalent including nitrogen (1.5%), potassium, and a few other elements. Micronutrients, like the name sounds, come in very small amounts of iron, copper, and other elements. Without these nutrients, the plants will be deficient and have problems with their growth. Leave may begin to turn different colors, ends will decay, or the plants won't grow to their full potential if they lack these nutrients.
In the garden, we weeded as usual. The water from the irrigation system
and rain morphed my beds, so I spent time reshaping them. My tomatoes have also grown rather tall since last week. (Both can be seen in the picture to the right.)
One of my ladybug peppers began flowering! This was really exciting to see, especially since I notice a pest had been munching on another one last week. >:( !
This week we got to plant our lettuce transplants! There were two different colors to choose from, so I chose two of each.
I also fertilized to the extreme this week because my plants were growing but not at as great as they should have been. I can't wait to see how the garden looks next Tuesday! Until Week 6!
